Day Tripping: Hendrie Valley Sanctuary

Hike one of RBG’s most diverse trail systems.

RBG Hike

The Royal Botanical Gardens is located in Burlington on Plains Road near Hamilton. It’s a great place explore with several beautiful gardens. The RBG also has more than 27 kilometers of walking trails and 31 trails including lots of lookouts, boardwalks, and stream crossings.

Hendrie Valley Sanctuary Trails
One of three main trails available at the RBG (Cootes Paradise and Escarpment Property Trails are the other two), the Hendrie Valley Sanctuary Trail is great for a morning or afternoon hike. The trail is just 4.5 kilometres long – doable for most – and includes five lookouts, five creek crossings and two boardwalks. There are some hills and slopes as you descend into or out of the valley. The trails include forested areas, floodplain wetlands, boardwalk covered marshes and creeks with seasonal spawning fish. Lots of wildlife. A gorgeous variety of ecosystems. Bring your camera!

The Hendrie Valley Sanctuary can be accessed from the RBG Centre, Cherry Hill Gate, Valley Inn and Laking Garden. Parking is available (pay parking). Pets must be leashed. No bikes or runners allowed. For more information, visit: The RBG or click here for a map (pdf).
